Stripy Soxx KAL

THE ADVENT KAL 2023 BY LANGYARNS

You can never have enough hand-knitted socks. So for Advent we are knitting the Stripy Soxx created by LifeOnYarn. Are you going to join us?

Starting on the 1st of December, then every two days until Christmas we will release a new part of the instructions for free, here on our website. For the best results always knit the first sock on one day and the second sock on the next. In this way you will have a new pair of socks by Christmas, to wear yourself or to give away.

The design is available in three sizes for 4-ply sock wool such as JAWOLLJAWOLL SILK or ALPACA SOXX 4-fach, and in two sizes for thicker yarn, for example ATLANTISSUPER SOXX 6-fach or ALPACA SOXX 6-fach. So you can knit along with us, even if you don’t have too much time or experience. In addition, the socks are knitted toe-up (starting at the toe and finishing at the cuff), so you can make the length suit your pace and perhaps only knit ‘shorties’.

We will be working with three colours, but the project is also great for adventurous beginners, as we only knit with one colour per round.

The instructions for the different sizes will be presented as follow: 1/2/3/4/5.

The Yarn

You need a total of 3 colours of a 4-ply or 6-ply sock wool. For the various patterns to turn out well, we recommend that you choose 3 colours that contrast relatively well with each other.

Col 1: your darkest colour

Col 2: a tone between colours 1 and 3

Col 3: your lightest colour

The Needles

We recommend that you use two circular needles / sets of double-pointed needles / addi CraSyTrios, so you can work both socks parallel, at the same time.

2.5 mm for 4-ply sock yarns

3.5 mm for 6-ply sock yarns

The Gauge

30 stitches x 46 rounds in stocking st for 4-ply sock yarns

23 stitches x 32 rounds in stocking st for 6-ply sock yarns

Are you ready to start our Stripy Soxx KAL?

Today, we begin with the toe. To warm up, we are knitting it in a classic stripe pattern. The use of stripes for the toe also makes it super easy to keep track of the increases 😉.

If you've never used Judy's magic cast-on before, you can for example have a look at the following video on YouTube: Knitting Help - Judy's Magic Cast-On.

Instructions:

Toe: With Col 1 cast on a total of 16 sts over 2 needles using Judy’s magic cast-on (figure of 8).

With Col 1:
Rnd 1
: knit, place 2 markers - one at the beginning of the round and another in the middle.
Rnd 2: *k3, M1L (With LN pick up the cross-wise strand between 2 stitches (insert N from front to back) and knit into the back of this loop), work to 3 sts before the next marker, M1L, k3*, rep from * to * 2 times = 20 sts.

With Col 3:
Rnd 3
: knit.
Rnd 4: *k1, M1L, work to 1 st before the next marker, M1L, k1 *, rep from * to * 2 times = 24 sts.

Repeat rnds 1 – 4 until there are 48/52/60/64/68 sts on the needles (= 8/9/11/12/13 stripes)

From now on, until we come to the heel, the first half of your stitches (up to the marker) are for the sole of the foot and the second half for the top of the foot. The sole is knitted entirely in stocking stitch, while we will be knitting a range of different patterns over the top of the foot in the coming days.

Today we are knitting little snowflakes or shooting stars into our socks – don’t forget to make a wish!

Instructions:

With Col 2:
Rnd 1: knit.
Rnd 2: knit.

With Col 3:
Rnd 3: knit to the marker, *k1, sl1 with the yarn at the back of your work* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 4: knit to the marker, *p1, sl1 with the yarn at the back of your work* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.

With Col 2:
Rnd 5: knit.
Rnd 6: knit.

With Col 3:
Rnd 7: knit to the marker, *sl1 with the yarn at the back of your work, k1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 8: knit to the marker, *sl1 with the yarn at the back of your work, p1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.

Repeat rnds 1 – 8 for a total of 14/18/18/18/22 rounds.

Today we are concentrating on the two most fundament stitches in knitting – knit and purl stitches. There is nothing simpler, but at the same time, changing the rhythm and shifting stitches can create patterns which appear considerably more complicated than they really are.

Are you ready?

Instructions:

With Col 1:
Rnd 1: knit.
Rnd 2: knit.
Rnd 3: knit to the marker, *k1, p3* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round (depending on the size you may or may not get a complete repeat at the end).
Rnd 4: knit to the marker, *k1, p3* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 5: knit to the marker, *k1, p3* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 6: knit.
Rnd 7: knit.
Rnd 8: knit to the marker, *p2, k1, p1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 9: knit to the marker, *p2, k1, p1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 10: knit to the marker, *p2, k1, p1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.

Repeat rnds 1 – 10 for a total of 11/11/16/21/21 rounds.

Today we are going to try a linen stitch with 3 colours. By slipping stitches and working knit stitches you can produce an effect like woven fabric. If you tend to knit very tightly you may need to change to a larger needle for this pattern. Just don’t forget to change back for the next bit, if you do.

Instructions:

With Col 3:
Rnd 1: knit to the marker, *k1, sl1 with the yarn in front of your work* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 2: knit to the marker, *sl1 with the yarn in front of your work, k1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.

With Col 2:
Rnd 3: knit to the marker, *k1, sl1 with the yarn in front of your work* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 4: knit to the marker, *sl1 with the yarn in front of your work, k1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.

With Col 1:
Rnd 5: knit to the marker, *k1, sl1 with the yarn in front of your work* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 6: knit to the marker, *sl1 with the yarn in front of your work, k1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.

Repeat rows 1 – 6 for a total of 10/12/16/18/20 rounds.

Following on from yesterday’s more demanding pattern, today we are keeping it classic with a finely textured surface to catch the candlelight.

Instructions:

With Col 1:
Rnd 1: knit to the marker, *k1, p1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 2: knit.
Rnd 3: knit to the marker, *p1, k1* repeat from *to* for the rest of the round.
Rnd 4: knit.

Repeat rnds 1 – 4 for a total of 8/10/12/12/14 rounds.

We are approaching the heel, but before that we have a stripe pattern that is simple, but effective. Which pattern do you like best so far?

Instructions:

With Col 3:
Rnd 1: knit.
Rnd 2: knit.

With Col 2:
Rnd 3: knit.
Rnd 4: knit.

Repeat rnds 1 – 4 for a total of 11 rounds.

Yay, we've not only managed to finish half of our socks, but also half of Advent has already passed. It's high time for our socks to get their heels.

Instructions:

Boomerang heel, without any rnds between the 2 halves
(worked in rows over half of the sts)

With Col 1:
Row 1 (RS): knit to 1 st before marker, turn.
Row 2 (WS): 1 double st (= sl1 purlwise with the yarn in front, pull the yarn taut over to the back of your work until the st looks like a double st), purl to 1st before BOR, turn.
Row 3 (RS): 1 double st, knit to 1st before the double st, turn
Row 4 (WS): 1 double st, purl to 1st before the double st, turn.
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until 9/9/11/11/11 sts remain in the center.
Next Row (RS): 1 double st, knit to end of heel (= 16/17/20/21/22 sts) working each double st as one stitch, turn.
Next Row (WS): 1 double st, purl to end of heel, remembering to work each double st as one stitch, turn.

With Col 2:
Row 1 (RS): 1 double st (double st with col 1, then change to col 2), k16/17/20/21/22, turn.
Row 2 (WS): 1 double st, p9/9/11/11/11, turn.
Row 3 (RS): 1 double st, knit to 1 st after the double st (remember to work the double st as 1 st), turn.
Row 4 (WS): 1 double st, purl to 1 st after the double st (remember to work the double st as 1 st), turn.
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until you have 21/23/27/29/31 sts between the double sts.
Next Round (RS): 1 double st, resume to knitting over all sts in the rnd (remember to work double sts as 1 st).

To achieve a seamless transition between the foot and the leg, we will add a few extra stripes. From now on, we'll knit the design across all stitches, even if it's not yet apparent in today's pattern.

Instructions:

With Col 3:
Rnd 1: knit (in the 1st Rnd, work remaining double sts as one stitch).
Rnd 2: knit.
