Donegal Blanket

the 2024 Advent-KAL by LANGYARNS

What could be better than snuggling up under a handmade blanket on a cold winter's day? This Advent season, we’ll be knitting the Donegal Blanket, inspired by the textures of traditional Irish knitting.

The blanket uses all 23 colors of DONEGAL TWEED+. Of course, you can also knit it in a single color or in a color combination of your choice. Each day, we’ll knit around 35-45 grams of yarn or about 20 rows – but there’s no rush; it’s perfectly fine if your blanket is finished a little later.

Starting December 1, 2024, we will publish a new section of the pattern here on our website every morning at 9:00 am.

We look forward to knitting together with you and creating a beautiful blanket!

Size

Ca. 120 cm x 160 cm.

Materials

  • DONEGAL TWEED+ in 23 colors, 1 skein per color (1143.0006, 0009, 0014, 0015, 0016, 0017, 0020, 0023, 0024, 0025, 0026, 0033, 0039, 0059, 0060, 0065, 0068, 0070, 0073, 0074, 0094, 0096, 0098), or 21 skeins distributed across your chosen colors.

  • addi Christmas Lace needle, size 4.5 or 5 mm, in 80 or 100 cm.

Gauge

18 stitches x 28 rows in stockinette stitch.

For a blanket, it’s not essential to match the gauge exactly. However, variations in gauge may affect the amount of yarn needed and the finished dimensions of your project.

Cast on 200 stitches with off-white (1143.0094).

Row 1 (WS): Knit.

Row 2 (RS): Knit.

Row 3: Knit.

Knit 16 rows according to Chart A (so you will knit the entire chart twice).

Row 20: Knit 4 stitches, purl to the last 4 stitches, knit 4 stitches.

Row 21: Knit 4 stitches, purl to the last 4 stitches, knit 4 stitches.

Attention: Since you will be casting on today and knitting one more row than on other days, please make sure that your gauge swatch is correct to ensure you have enough yarn. If you are knitting the blanket in a single color or with fewer than the 23 colors planned, you can, in the worst case, simply start a new ball of yarn for the last 1 or 2 rows. This will usually be balanced out in the following days.

How to read a chart:
Knitting charts visually represent how the right side of your work will look when finished. Rows are numbered to indicate where to start: odd-numbered rows (right side) are read from right to left, and even-numbered rows (wrong side) are read from left to right. Each symbol on the chart shows a specific stitch, and its action depends on the side you’re working on. For right-side rows, follow the symbols as they appear (e.g., knit a knit symbol), but on wrong-side rows, reverse the action (e.g., purl a knit symbol). Always refer to the legend for stitch meanings and read the chart from bottom to top as you work.
As the chart contains a repeat section (outlined with a red contour), you will start with the stitches before the repeat, then work the repeat section as many times as needed until the last few stitches of the row, and finish with the stitches after the repeat. For example, with Chart A beginning with 4 stitches, you will knit those, repeat the outlined section until 4 stitches remain, and then knit the final stitches as shown in the chart.

P.S.: If you right-click on the picture of the chart, you can open it in a new window or print it out to read it more easily.
