The thought behind BABY COTTON NATURALLY COLORED is, as the name says, to use cotton fibers in the colours that can be grown naturally, and not dyed.
Cotton occurs naturally in three different shades – green, ivory and brown – grown from seed varieties neglected for decades due to intensive production und the demand for ecru cotton. The high quality yarn produced as a result represents a saving in water consumption of up to 90 %, compared to conventional cotton.
Because the colour is as grown, and not dyed, the yarn is exposed to fewer chemicals that could potentially irritate the skin, which makes the this yarn particularly good for babies and people with sensitive skin - but not only for them, of course.
We offer a palette of 7 shades, all created by plying together the three base colours of green, ivory and brown.
Background information:
Inspired by ethical and sustainable projects, Santi Mallorquí’Gou, the CEO of OCC (Organic Cotton Colours), began growing a range of natural colours of cotton fiber in Northeast Brazil in 1992. Since then, the project has grown to include over 400 farming families.
All of the participants in the project and their families enjoy the benefit of economic stability. In addition, 10 % of the value of the cotton is reinvested to improve the production systems within the community.
With the focus on regenerative farming practices, this cotton is grown alongside up to five foodstuffs, which also provides natural fertiliser for the soil. The process is pesticide-free, uses no machinery, no genetically modified seeds, and relies exclusively on rain water for irrigation.
Hint:
Due to its natural composition, the colors of this yarn may fade when exposed to direct sunlight. To ensure color durability, avoid exposing the skeins or finished projects to direct sunlight when not in use.
