With the yarn in front of the RN insert N from R to L into 2 sts, catch yarn and purl both sts together.

How to knit 2 stitches together?

Insert RN from L to R, first in the 2nd st then at the same time in the 1st st, catch yarn and k both sts together.

This results in a decrease of one stitch slanted to the right.

How to knit a stable selvedge?

On the RS and WS: p the edge st, continue knitting to the last st, k this st through the back loop. 

How to knit a flat selvedge?

On the RS and WS: k the first st, work to the last st, slip the last st purl-wise with the yarn in front. 

How to knit the knotted selvedge?

On the RS and WS: slip the first st k-wise without knitting, work to the last st, k the last st or alternatively k through back loop. 

How do I slip a stitch purl-wise (without knitting)?

Lay yarn in front of the RN, insert RN from R to L into the st on the LN, take LN out of the st.
